Proper preparation is critical for a safe and effective laser hair removal session. You must avoid all sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanners on the area to be treated for at least two to four weeks before your Scottsdale appointment. Treating tanned skin can cause adverse reactions. You must also stop waxing, tweezing, or using depilatory creams for 4-6 weeks prior, as the laser needs the hair root to be present in the follicle. You must, however, shave the entire treatment area 12-24 hours before you come to our Scottsdale office. Arrive with clean skin, free of any lotions, oils, or deodorants.
After your session, it is normal to experience some mild redness and swelling in the treated area, similar to a slight sunburn. This typically subsides within a few hours to a day, and you can soothe the area with a cool compress. The most important post-care rule for our Scottsdale clients is strict sun avoidance. You must apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher daily to the treated area, as your skin will be more sensitive. For 24-48 hours, you should also avoid hot tubs, saunas, steam rooms, and strenuous exercise that could heat the skin and cause irritation. The treated hairs will begin to “shed” over the next 1-3 weeks, this is normal and a sign the treatment worked.
